Call For Papers: Southerly’s 80th Anniversary Issue

Southerly is turning 80 and you are invited to contribute to the anniversary issue!

We are especially interested in work about anniversaries, cultural and literary elders, longevity, legacies and renewal, late style, cultures of small literary magazines in Australia, and assessments of changes in the literary culture from 1939 to the present.

It would be very interesting  to hear from writers who have had work published in Southerly over this period – as well as new perspectives on its role in Australian literature culture.
We need this work by 31 July 2019.

Southerly does everything possible to have all submissions read and a response sent out within three months. However, if you haven’t heard back from us in three months, then please assume Southerly will not be accepting your work this time. Due to the high volume of work we receive, we cannot provide feedback.

Please read our guidelines before submitting. Questions and concerns can be addressed to

Submit via our Submittable portal.

  1. Hi Southerly Editors,
I submitted 3 poems on 26/3/’19: ‘The Poem Itself’, ‘Penguin Boys’ and ‘Mother In Aged Care’ for the 80th Anniversary Issue and I’ve never heard whether they were accepted or rejected.

I hope they were still under consideration an d could you tell me what the decision was?

    Thank you,
    Mike Greenacre
