June Monthly Blogger – Marie Munkara!

An enormous thanks to Luke Carman for his excellent posts. This month our blogger is Marie Munkara. Her bio is below: Marie was born on the banks of the Mainoru River in Arnhemland and spent her early years growing up on Bathurst Island. Her first Novel Every Secret thing (UQP) won the David Unaipon Award in 2008 and the NT Book of the Year in 2010. Her two children’s books (Laguna Bay) Rusty Brown and Rusty and Jojo, were released in January 2014, and her second novel A Most Peculiar Act in April 2014. Marie has recently completed her memoir

Vale JS Harry

JS Harry (1939-2015) JS Harry, one of Australian poetry’s “great transgressors”, described by Peter Porter in 2007 as “the most arresting poet working in Australia today”, died peacefully in her sleep Wednesday morning 20th May. It followed a long and debilitating illness, which she bore uncomplainingly with the good humour and grace that was so typical of her. Until her final days she continued to respond with wisdom, acuteness and appreciation to visiting family and friends. Born in South Australia, Harry spent most of her life in Sydney. Early on she began submitting her stories and poetry to children’s magazines

What does war mean to us now? With our knowledge of the long aftermath, what does it mean to be at peace? What is the difference between post-war and peace? How do peace and remembrance combine? How do we remember in the midst of war? 2015 is the centenary of the landing at Gallipoli, a key date for Australia amidst the global remembrance of the Great War.       The issue of Southerly titled The Naked Writer, published in March 2014, included outstanding essays, fiction and non-fiction, poetry and reviews on writer, the writing process and the links between life and work. His bio is below: Andy Jackson’s collection, Among the Regulars (papertiger 2010) was shortlisted for the Kenneth Slessor Prize and Highly Commended in the Anne Elder Award. He won the 2013 Whitmore Press Manuscript Prize with the thin bridge, which has recently been published. In 2010, he was an Asialink Resident at the University of Madras, Chennai, India, where he wrote poems exploring medical tourism, which resulted in the collection Immune Systems (Transit Lounge 2015).
