Southerly manages submissions using Submittable. This will let you see the status of your work quickly and easily, and keep track of all of your submissions. If you have an account already, please click on the link and use your account. If you have not used Submittable before, just click on the link and create one – it’s simple, easy, and free, and will let you submit to Southerly as much as you like.

  • We accept short fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction, and academic essays.
  • We accept creative work only from Australian and New Zealand citizens, or residents of Australia.
  • We accept academic work only on Australian literature and Australian authors.
  • We ask for a 50 word bio note on all submissions. Please include this in your form submission.

Southerly does everything possible to have all submissions read and a response sent out within three months. However, if you haven’t heard back from us in three months, then please assume Southerly will not be accepting your work this time. Due to the high volume of work we receive, we cannot provide feedback.

Copyright Disclaimer

  • Southerly has first publication rights only. The copyright of each piece belongs to the author. The copyright of the collection belongs to Southerly.
  • Articles will appear in either the print journal or the online section of the site. The payment and the copyright for both sections is the same.
  • Southerly requires all authors to register with the Copyright Agency in order to collect any copyright entitlements that their work attracts. Southerly does not have the resources to distribute copyright payments to authors.
  • Southerly has converted the full archive of Southerly, from 1939 to the present, into scanned pages that can be accessed via the digital publishing house Informit. This means that all Southerly publications have now been archived. This is also part of a much larger project of archiving and making available Australian literary journals, including Meanjin, Griffith Review, Quadrant, and Island, among many others.
  • All creative works, articles, and reviews converted to electronic format will be correctly attributed and will appear as it was originally published.
  • Copyright will remain with the authors, and the material cannot be further republished without authorial permission.
  • Southerly will honour any requests to withdraw material from electronic publication. If any author does not wish their work to appear in this format, they should contact us immediately and their material will be withdrawn.
